EVARTS, Ky (WYMT) - Acting in self defense is what a Harlan County man accused of trying to kill his brother said he was doing when he shot him.

On Friday night, police arrested Bill King in Evarts after an argument with his brother Jerome turned violent.

Police tell us Bill King and his brother Jerome got into an argument about lumber.

That fight ended in gunfire.

WYMT spoke with Bill King from his cell at the Harlan County Detention Center.

He said he never tried to shoot his brother.

"Shooting down at the ground we were. Pow, pow, pow, pow, and then, on the last shot, I do not know how he got shot," said King.

King is charged with criminal attempt to commit murder.

But he said that was not his intention.

"Oh lord if I had tried to kill him, I would have shot him between the eyes or in the stomach. It would have killed him dead," said King.

Most of the King family lives on Kelly Street in Evarts, which is where the shooting happened.

Diana Perkins is one of Bill and Jerome's sisters.

She said her brothers love each other and their disagreement should not have ended like this

"They are both old. Both of them are up in their sixties and it is just a bad thing. I love both my brothers," said Perkins.

There are still signs in the yard of the home where the argument happened, which show where the two men fought.

Perkins said their actions have left her uneasy.

"It is just bad, you know? I feel horrible about it. You know, I been up all night," said Perkins.

King said he regrets what happened and vowed to stay away from his brother in the future.

"That should have never been, two brothers fighting like that, one of us could have got killed," said King.

Family members told WYMT that Jerome King is in stable condition at a Tennessee hospital.

Bill King claims his brother threatened him with a knife.

He said he does not remember who had the gun originally.

As the investigation into a shooting in Evarts continues Harlan County Sheriff Marvin Lipfird confirmed brothers, Bill King and Jerome King, were arguing over lumber.

Lipfird said Bill King is now at the Harlan County Detention Center and charged with criminal attempt to commit murder.

Bill King was on Kelly Street with his brother around 5:30 p.m. when the dispute happened Lipfird said.

The sheriff said he has known Bill King his entire life.

When he received the call about the disagreement he went to Bill King's home.

"I asked him what had happened and he said that he and his brother had got into a physical altercation over some two by sixes that his brother apparently had taken or something," said Lipfird. "They had fought for a rather lengthy amount of time."

Officials said Jerome pulled out a small pocket knife on Bill.

Lipfird said Bill told his brother not to come towards him.

The sheriff said Bill fired shots into the ground, shot his brother and left the scene.

Law enforcement officials said Jerome King is in stable condition at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee.
