A Harlan County man is accused of torturing the family cat! State police tell us Rex Hinton threw the cat into a wood burning stove, killing it!
Court documents that show Hinton faces charges, including torturing animals.
State Police say on March 28th, troopers went to a home on Little Shepherd Trail in Harlan County for a man wanting to harm himself.
Troopers say while arguing with his wife, the man killed the family's Callico Cat by burning it to death.
"The husband and wife had got into a verbal dispute. The husband had grabbed the family cat and threw it into wood burning stove and slammed the door," said Trooper Shane Jacobs.
No one could save the cat but police and EMTs took the man, 49-year-old Rex Hinton to the hospital for help.
Once he was released from the hospital this week, state police charged him with torture of an animal.
"It's a very serious crime. It's one to five years in prison where the cat had died," said Trooper Jacobs.
The trooper wrote in the arrest warrant Hinton was motivated by the intent to increase, maximize, and prolong the pain of the family pet.
"It's still under investigation why he actually grabbed the cat, threw it into the wood burning stove. We're still trying to figure out the details," said Trooper Jacobs.
Hinton is being held in jail on a five thousand dollar full cash bond. He turned down our request for a jailhouse interview.
