HARLAN, Ky. (WYMT) - A Harlan County man is accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of items from a truck at a motel.

Harlan City Police arrested 32-year-old Jason Peace on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say surveillance video from the Mount Air Motel shows the suspect and the theft.

Surveillance video shows a car circling the parking lot early Saturday morning.

"He drove around for several minutes picking out his victim," said Mike Thomas, Harlan Police Chief.

Police say the driver then parked next to a truck from Ohio. The video shows the man then taking items from the truck and loading it into his car. Police say the thief stole tools, camping supplies, and other items.

The victim, a man visiting the Off-Road Adventure Park, discovered his items missing the next day.

"Basically his truck bed contents were emptied in the middle of the night," said Thomas.

Officers then found the car the next day parked at Wal-mart. Police say the driver, Jason Peace, admitted he stole the items and said it is him in the surveillance video. Police arrested him Wednesday afternoon.

Police were able to recover all of the stolen items and return it to the owner.

"About two thousand dollars worth of stuff was recovered from pawn shops and the suspect still had in his vehicle at the time of his questioning and was recovered then. Everything was returned to the owner and he was very pleased, very happy," said Thomas.

Peace is charged with theft by unlawful taking. Bond is $10,000.

He declined our interview request.

Police say the victim has returned home to Ohio.
