Police are warning children in one Harlan County town to be aware of a possible kidnapper.

Police say a man drove up to a child riding his bike in Evarts last week, and tried to grab him.

He got away, but the child's mother tells us he is still scared to go outside since it happened.

Lorene Cottrell says she is thankful her child is safe, but is worried that the suspect is still out there.

Police are searching and say children need to be careful when outside on their own.

Cottrell says around 10:00 Friday night, her son was riding his bike down the hill from her house to his father's house. He was with his older sister and her boyfriend, but got ahead of them.

"They seen that he was close to the house so they turned around and started heading back a little bit," said Cottrell.

However, it was not long before he turned around and raced back to them.

"He comes riding his bicycle scared to death and he got behind my daughter's boyfriend," said Cottrell.

The child told his parents that a man in a mask driving a black Ford truck tried to grab him, but he was able to get away.

"That's very scary, especially in Harlan County. You never think about something like that to happen in Harlan County," said Sheriff Marvin Lipfird.

Lipfird says children need to be more careful then ever when outside, because danger can be just around the corner.

"The kids need to run around in pairs. Don't go running down dark alleys and stuff like that," said Lipfird.

"Lord it scared me. I just thank the Lord he didn't get abducted," said Cottrell.

Cottrell says her son has a much earlier curfew now, but adds that it's hard to feel safe anymore.

Sheriff Lipfird says if you witness a kidnapping in progress, call 911 immediately.

But he says if you have any information about this incident, please contact the Sheriff's department.
