EVARTS, Ky. (WYMT) - People in one Harlan County community are forming a Neighborhood Watch program in hopes of reducing crime.
People in Evarts have organized the program.
The idea got started at a Fourth of July event. Neighbors decided to band together year round to keep an eye out for anything suspicious. The sheriff's department and police department are helping people know what to look for.
"Law enforcement doesn't run neighborhood watch programs, contrary to what people think. We're one facet of it so to speak. The whole key of it is neighborhood watch. Neighbors watching their own neighbors is basically what it is," said Sheriff Marvin Lipfird.
The Evarts United Methodist Men's Group is organizing meetings.
So far, at least twenty-five people are participating.
