Police say employees at James A. Cawood Elementary School in Harlan County found a syringe in the student's backpack Monday afternoon.

Troopers with Kentucky State Police contacted the the child's parents and they were arrested and charged with endangerment to the welfare of a minor.

Police say they arrested the couple after teachers at the school found the syringe in the 5-year-old's backpack.

We are not releasing the names of the parents to try and protect the identity of the child.

Police are not sure what the syringe was used for or even if it had been used at all.

Police say the boy's parents told them they had no idea where the syringe came from.
