HARLAN, Ky. (WYMT) - Police say 24-year-old James Daniel Bailey stole thousands of dollars from WTUK radio station in Harlan, but he did not get too far.
Police say they caught Bailey with the money at a car lot.
WTUK Station Manager Jeff Capps says he was preparing the bank bag in his office Tuesday when he got called down the hall.
"It was no more than 20 minutes, 15 probably," said Jeff Capps.
In that short time, police say one man came into the radio station and stole the thousands of dollars from the bag.
"Went to the bank to make the deposit, not there," Capps said.
Capps says an employee told him Daniel Bailey came to the radio station to see him around the same time as he was preparing the bank bag, but Capps says Bailey left without talking to him.
"He saw the time and the opportunity and he took advantage of it," said Mike Thomas, Harlan City Police Chief.
Capps believes Bailey snuck into his office while he was down the hall and took the cash.
"He immediately within minutes was trying to spend it," said Chief Thomas.
Police say while looking for Bailey, they got information he was out buying a new car. They immediately started searching car lots and found him at Austin's Car Lot in Rosspoint.
"We found him at the car lot in the process of putting a down payment on a vehicle," said Chief Thomas.
Police say they recovered almost all of the money and returned it to Capps.
"I couldn't thank them enough. I spent last night thanking them," Capps said.
Police say Bailey confessed to taking the money.
Bailey is in the Harlan County Detention Center charged with theft over ten thousand dollars. His bond is ten thousand dollars full cash.
