A two-year old girl was hospitalized Thursday after being pulled from the water after nearly drowning. The child was found in a backyard pool at a home on Curdsville Road in Mercer County. The girl's grandmother was performing CPR on her when help arrived.

Paramedics were able to revive two-year-old Honore Lefau before taking her to an area hospital. She was then life-flighted to UK Hospital where she remained in critical condition Thursday night.

The Lefau family pool was ready to be the site of months of summer fun. The family never thought it would become the source of something horrible until two-year-old Honore wandered away from her mother and grandmother. "They lost track of her," Burgin Police Chief Jim Caldwell said, "and they started looking for her, and finally one of the children jumped into the pool. The water in the pool is very murky. They couldn't see the bottom. One of the children jumped into the pool and began searching with her feet and found the baby in the bottom of the pool at that time, so we really do not know how long she was down."

Caldwell says both police and Child Protective Services are looking into the incident. "Any time a child is injured like this, an investigation is done," Caldwell said, "I don't really foresee any criminal charges in this incident. I think it's a tragic accident. I think anybody that's got a two-year-old will tell you how easy it is to lose track of one, and I think that's what happened today. I don't see any signs of neglect."

Neighbors say they often see Honore's mother watching the children closely, and their hearts go out to the family. "They didn't have a child gate up. They didn't have a fence around the pool," Caldwell said, "They did have some items stacked in front of the steps of the pool, but apparently the child just climbed right over them. You can't child-proof the world. Do the best you can, and keep track of the children."
