Busy Mercer County road shut down after cooking oil spilled onto roadway

A busy Mercer County road is shut down.

Harrodsburg Police tell us U.S. 127 is blocked, beginning at the U.S. 68 intersection (Lexington Street), after cooking oil, carried by a truck somehow leaked onto the roadway.

Boyle County Emergency Management tell us the truck had stopped at the King Buffet in Danville, when it began leaking in Boyle County, and continued until around 250 gallons of cooking oil spilled on U.S. 127 in Harrodsburg. The truck was on its way to New Jersey. There were six containers of cooking oil in the truck.

A business is cleaning up the spill by putting sand on the roadway.

Traffic through the city is being detoured around the bypass until further notice. The road could be blocked until 6 p.m.

Officials say they're afraid cars could go sliding if they hit the oil. We're told some of the oil has also gotten into brake lines.
