A fire destroyed a man's home in rural Mercer County early Monday morning.
The homeowner, Bruce Jackson, says his smoke detector woke him up around three this morning. He got himself and his five dogs out of the home on Huffman Lane, and ran to a neighbors house for help.
He says it took volunteer firefighters about forty minutes to reach his rural home and all he could do was watch the fire grow while he waited. By the time they got there, the fire had spread through the house and flames were shooting out of the roof.
Fire crews from several areas came to the scene but the home is a total loss.
Jackson says it's going to be hard enough dealing with losing all of his possessions but he's also dealing with losing all of his mother's. She died three years ago and everything she owned was in this house too.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
