A central Kentucky man who shot himself in the head the day after allegedly stabbing and shooting another man to death and attacking his wife in 2010 has been found competent to stand trial.

Mercer Circuit Judge Darren Peckler on Thursday ruled that 52-year-old James M. Kelley has recovered enough from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to participate in his own defense.

Kelly of Lexington shot himself in the head in December 2010. Police say the day before he attacked John "Bud" Dacci and killed him before turning on Dacci's wife, Maryann, in their Herrington Lake home.

Maryann Dacci was shot but survived and called 911.

Prosecutor Richie Bottoms told The Advocate-Messenger he is strongly considering seeking the death penalty against Kelley.
