It's been nearly two weeks since his daughters death. On Thursday, Mercer County Sheriff Ernie Kelty said he's getting by with love and support from his family and the community.
Police say 17-year old Alyssa Kelty died after her car collided with an SUV on a particularly dangerous curve on Perryville Road in Mercer County.
Sheriff Kelty says its been difficult knowing Alyssa won't be able to experience the things she had looked forward to in life.
"I'll be honest, there's been times I'll get to thinking that there won't be a prom, and there won't be a graduation. When I do this, I pray even harder, and I stick with my prayer and my family and my friends and we look at the positives," Kelty said.
Sheriff Kelty says he's been touched by the outpouring of support, not only from the community, but from Alyssa's classmates.
"The outpouring of love and caring that I've seen from the kids in this community, I'm very proud of our youth. And I've expressed that to them, and I've let them know that they have been there for me and my family. And I'm definitely gonna be there for them," Kelty said.
A scholarship fund has been set up as a way to remember Alyssa Kelty. Sheriff Kelty says more than $2,000 has been raised for it already.
