Prestonsburg, Ky. (August 26, 2010) – Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) Student Government Association (SGA) officers and members concluded their summer with a rewarding community partnership. During the fall semester SGA was approached with an initiative of providing holiday dinners for over forty families in the Little Mud Community. During the collaboration and planning for both project. SGA was then asked if they could sponsor snacks for summer camp. The project continued to grow and the planning got more intense. Lisa Stumbo, Admission Advisor and Vera Joiner, Director of Student Activities assisted with planning the menu for the entire week which consisted of foods to promote healthy eating.
The officers and members were also engaged with the participants ranging in ages that from 3-13 . Some of the weeks activities were reading, arts& crafts, singing, educational opportunities at BSCTC and outdoor activities which the kids enjoyed. Lisa and Vera as well as the SGA students encouraged the kids and their parents the importance of nutritional eating, diversity, and how education plays an important role in having a better quality of life. Their ultimate message: Your aspirations and dreams are obtainable!
The most importance values learned from everyone is the importance of giving back, leadership, diversity and community engagement.
