JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Organizers spent months planning this year's Pop's Chevrolet Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags and Saturday was race day.
Drag racing fans enjoyed the day out at Combs Field Airport, where organizers say while the roaring engines and squealing tires are the focus there is much more to the Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags.
Organizer Kent Rose explains, "We've got 100 big wheels and hot wheels for the kids, we've just got all kinds of stuff...it is fun, friendly, and family stuff. We've got 'Pig in a Poke' doing all the vending."
Organizers say creating a family friendly event has been their focus so that racing fans can bring their kids along
Shawn Gwinn brought his whole family and says, "I love racing. I don't have a car to put in but I love coming to watch everybody race."
Raleigh Roberts is competing in the races and says, "There's cars we've never seen and we race around here all the time." That is because drivers come from all across the country to put their cars in full throttle and race down the runway
Rose says, "It just keeps spring boarding, one thing leads to another, you know, we started this thing with seven cars and a megaphone."
The event has gained national attention causing the Speed Channel's Brett Wagner and Bobby Brantley from the television series Lizard Lick Towing to travel to Eastern Kentucky and check out the event.
Bobby Brantley says, "That's our fans right there...people who like this is our fans and who we want to come and see...Waffle House eating, Walmart shopping, drag racin' fans."
Most importantly, organizers say they are happy to put on this event for the folks in Eastern Kentucky.
