They are calling it unfair and an abuse of power, but Mayor Bob Porter says it was all a simple mistake.
His utility bill had not been paid since 2009, and was more than $7,000 behind.
"Someone chose to release that information to the public and the bill's paid. I don't know what else to say about it really," said Porter.
The question lingering in many minds is why were his utilities never cut off?
"I never had any discussions with the utilities in that regard, and so, it wasn't," said Porter.
He says he paid it at the end of June and that it really should not be an issue.
"It's just in small towns it's the way the political system works, and I understand that," said Porter.
Anonymous sources say they are fed up with politicians abusing power, and they say if they do not take action It will just keep happening.
They are organizing a group to speak at the next city council meeting, calling for the council to take whatever action they deem necessary including asking for the mayor's resignation.
Several people told WYMT about the issue. They called it a black eye for the city and county and are asking people to speak up.
The city council meeting is at 7:00 tonight at the Paintsville Recreation Center and is open to the public.
