STAFFORDSVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Some people in Johnson County are coming together to protect their community.

They think crime is increasing in the area, and they want to watch out for each other.

Staffordsville is a small community in Johnson County, but the people there say there is no shortage of crime.

"It is getting to be quite common for things to happen in the rural areas of our county, break-ins, burglaries and things of that nature," said Staffordsville resident Tom Wyatt.

They decided to take matters in their own hands and created a neighborhood watch program.

"Neighbors watching out for neighbors," said Staffordsville Fire Chief Jeff Helton.

People in the area have teamed up with the Staffordsville Fire Department. They hope bringing everyone together with the neighborhood watch program will help reduce the amount of crime in the area, especially during the holidays.

"More so this year than any other year because our economic times are in more peril this year than they have been in previous years," said Wyatt.

"We have people that are desperate. In desperate times people do desperate things," said Helton.

They say it is a small plan with big possibilities.

"Treat it like a small child. You get it started. You feed it. You nurture it and have the program grow and have it reach out into other communities," said Wyatt.

They hope by watching out for each other the neighborhood and the people can be a little safer.

"Before somebody actually gets hurt," said Helton.

Organizers have set a tentative meeting time for anyone wanting to get involved for tomorrow at 10 p.m. at the Staffordsville Fire Department.
