Man uses school award in scam

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - A man tried to scam a local business by claiming to raise money for an elementary school.

Police said the man was selling raffle tickets at the Neighborhood Pharmacy in Floyd County.

He claimed the tickets were a part of Porter Elementary’s Blue Ribbon Award.

Pharmacy officials did not donate to the fundraiser.

They found that it was a scam, after calling the school to verify.

Members of the Johnson county board said they wanted to make sure this does not happen to anyone else.

“We want to make sure that no one becomes a victim in the community and especially at the expense of children and the school,” said Harry Burchett with Johnson County Schools.

Police have asked anyone who thinks they may have been scammed to call the Floyd County Sheriff's Office.
