Police investigating a string of purse thefts in Paintsville

PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Police in Paintsville are investigating a string of purse thefts and officials believe the thief is targeting women dropping of their children at day care.

Tuesday morning a purse was stolen from a car parked at Tender Heart Child Care on Depot Rd....Paintsville Police say it is part of a string of thefts.

Police Chief Steve Sluss says, "Right around the corner from that business is another day care center, it is more busy and we had 4 incidents there."

A different day care, but police say the same exact story at T.L.C. Child Development Center.

Police say they believe someone was watching the parking lots, waiting for women to leave the cars to take their children into day care. "Ladies leaving their purses in the vehicle and it unlocked apparently long enough to drop off their children, and the same incident...someone comes by sees the door unlocked and grabs the purse, and takes off," explains Sluss.

Police say it takes only a matter of seconds for thieves to snatch a purse, so officers ask everyone to use caution no matter how long you are away from your car....especially this time of year.

"First off, lock your doors," says Officer Jerry Wiley. "If you have something valuable put it in your trunk or hide it under something in the car. If you can don't leave it in your car...especially this time of year around the holidays, we have a lot of break-ins."

Officers hope these tips will spare others from becoming victims.

Police say they do have a person of interest but are continuing to investigate. They are asking anyone with information or any local businesses who may have caught any suspicious activity on surveillance cameras to contact the Paintsville Police Department at (606) 789-4221.
