Two people injured in fire at Laurel County home

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Firefighters say two people have been injured, one seriously, in a fire at a home near London.

The fire broke out late Tuesday afternoon at a mobile home on Blakely Road, off Highway 363.

Etta Young lives near her sister, Molly Coots, and saw the smoke and flames coming from Coots' home as they were spreading.

She says Molly's son, Jimmy, was also at the home.

"He come around and he collapsed, then she collapsed," said Young.

Molly Coots was taken to Saint Joseph Hospital London, while Jimmy Coots was airlifted to UK Hospital in Lexington, where he's in serious condition. Family members say he went back into the home looking for their two dogs. Those dogs made it out okay.

"He was completely covered black, in smoke, all you could see was his eyeballs and his teeth, he was that black," said Young.

Firefighters say the home is a total loss, and only a Bible and a few pictures were recovered.

"It just blew out flames, all through everywhere," said Young.

The Keavy Fire Department says they don't have a cause of this fire, and say because of the extent of the damage inside the home, they may never know.

"They attacked it full force, but it was just fully engulfed," said Young.

Firefighters believe the fire started near a back bedroom.
