Fiery crash ties up traffic on Interstate 75 in Laurel County

CORBIN, Ky. (WKYT) - A fiery crash between a tractor trailer and a car has created a major traffic impact on Interstate 75 in Laurel County.

The crash happened around 8 p.m. Friday in the southbound lanes near mile marker 30, just north of Corbin.

Police say the driver of a car was speeding and lost control, then hit a FedEx tractor trailer.

The impact of the crash caused the cab of the tractor trailer to catch fire in the median of the interstate.

The smoke from the fire could be seen for miles, but firefighters say they were able to contain the fire to the cab. It did not spread to the cargo the truck was hauling.

Two people in the car, and the driver of the tractor trailer, were taken to a Corbin hospital with what police call non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the driver of the car will be charged with DUI.

After the crash, police shut down Interstate 75 in both directions at the scene. As of 10 p.m., one lane had reopened in each direction.

Emergency crews expect to be on the scene through at least midnight. Police say drivers can use U.S. 25 between London and Corbin as a detour.
