Laurel County Detention Center inmate dies

Cortney Renee Beldon was arrested by Kentucky State Police on March 3rd for falsely obtaining a controlled substance without an authorized prescription. Five days later, officials say they found her in her jail cell unable to stay conscious.

"Basically at the point of beginning to lose consciousness, I know that she did have a pulse when she was transported from the facility," said Jaime Mosley, Jailer for the Laurel County Detention Center.

But she died an hour later at St. Joseph's Hospital in London.

Officials say Beldon saw the medical staff several times during her stay at the Laurel County Detention Center.

"Complaints, nothing that would be viewed as a serious health issue or nature that would represent that serious, fatal threat," Mosley said.

Officials say her cell was put close to the medical department so she could be closely monitored.

Beldon was 28 years old.
