Laurel Sheriff's office aware of danger with drug stance

LONDON, Ky. (WKYT) - Drug roundups are becoming a regular part of the sheriff's office in Laurel County.

"The word on the street is that you don't deal drugs in Laurel County," said Captain Rodney Van Zant.

Sheriff Eugene Crum took a similar platform in West Virginia and the suspicion there is that could be a motive behind his death.

"So it really hits close to home as far as someone actively pursuing a law enforcement officer with ill intent," said Van Zant.

Police here say they don't necessarily feel like they have a target on their backs, but they say recent events have caused them to take a second look and be more vigilant in what they do.

"Most of the time people who are involved in drug activity are desperate to continue whatever they need to do to continue their addiction," said Van Zant.

Police say they always prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

"You have to balance speaking with the public on a cordial basis, being aware of their situation, and being aware of the threat that is there all the time," said Van Zant.
