LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) - An act of kindness is rewarded with violence. A 19-year old London man stopped on the side of a country road Sunday night to help another driver who appeared to be having car trouble, but the man would end up becoming a crime victim.

Sean Helton had stopped to help a woman who had apparently broke down in the middle of the road late Sunday night in Laurel County.

"She came up to my window and asked me if I could help her push her vehicle off the road. It had quit on her, so I got out the vehicle and helped her push it off... and things escalated," Helton said.

He says another vehicle pulled up behind him and two men got out and attacked him with a baseball bat and knife. The robbers made off with small items, but police say they were probably after cash. Sheriff's deputies say the details of the case are unusual.

"We now believe, because of the set of circumstances, that the lady was involved as well and that it was a setup deal. She raised the hood and the first vehicle that came along, they were going to stop and try to see what they could get," explained Gilbert Acciardo, of the Laurel County Sheriff's Department.

Acciardo warns the best thing to do if you come across a stranded driver is to keep going and call law enforcement.

Helton says he is pretty shook up over the ordeal, and he worries what would have happened if someone else had been the victim.

"I just know there's so many older couples that run up and down this road, and if that had been one of them or anybody of age, they could easily kill them and take everything they had," he said.

Helton says it is sad that he can not help someone in need without fear of being attacked.

The Laurel County Sheriff's Department is still investigating the robbery. If you have any information, call them at 606-864-6600. You can remain anonymous.
