LONDON, Ky. (WKYT) - So much damage, for no clear reason.
“This fairgrounds here is a place for the public. It’s hard to get money to keep it fixed up and then they come in here and do all of this,” said Denver Jones, pointing out all the damage left behind by vandals at the Laurel County Fairgrounds and Park.
Officials believe the vandals caused about $8,000 to $10,000 in damages. They suspect the damage was done by teenagers, between 15 to 20 years old. Vandalism was found on several different occasions.
“Destroyed these two lawnmowers. They ran a tractor through this corner back here,” said Jones, pointing out a corner section of the exhibit hall that had to be replaced.
The vandals also stole a home plate “tamper” from one building…and used it to break into the concession stand. Inside are thousands of dollars worth of equipment…yet nothing is missing.
“Just kids and mischief. That’s all I know. Didn’t steal anything,” said Jones.
Police are following up on a few leads.
“We got a constable who thinks he’s tracked down who done it,” said Jones.
The fairgrounds and parks dept. has some insurance but not enough to cover all the losses
