MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (WYMT) - It may time for Halloween but the Salvation Army is already preparing for Christmas.

Lt. Sarah Quinn already has a three ring binder full of applications for the Christmas Angel Tree program.

"We want to make sure all of our kids are properly taken care of," said Lt. Quinn.

She says around 1,800 children from Bell, Harlan, Knox, Whitley, Laurel, and Claiborne Counties are signed up this year. She says the number is higher than normal due to the region's economy.

"Being able to help the kids, help the families, brings a lot of joy to my heart and everybody who works with me," said Lt. Quinn.

She says they need help providing the toys, clothes, and food to the families. She says the local economy has also caused a drop in donations.

"Last year was a difficult time in our community including our donors, and we did struggle a little bit more in the past to get all the kids taken care of," said said.

They are asking churches, businesses, organizations, and families for help with donations.

"Every donation from the biggest to smallest, it all helps out in a big way." she said.

She says the goal is to fulfill the Christmas wishes for all 1,800 kids.

If you want to donate, you can contact the Salvation Army in Middlesboro. If you want to get an "angel" off a tree, they will be available in November.
