LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) - LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) - Folks across the area are gearing up for Memorial Day weekend.

Busy roads and high prices at the pump are things to keep in mind during your travels.

AAA reports that more than 34 million people will travel more than 50 miles from home this weekend.

Several travelers have gotten an early start to their holiday weekend and say even with the extra drivers the traffic has been pretty smooth.

AAA reports that more than 34 million people will travel more than 50 miles from home this weekend.

Drivers from all across the nation come through London on Interstate 75.

“A lot of Canadians and a lot of people from Michigan. A lot of people are headed to Florida that's where most everyone's going, said gas station cashier Regina Adams.

And as they travel the long distances for Memorial Day weekend, State Police officers make extra patrols.

Officers say they're looking for drivers under the influence, speeding or not buckled up.

“With the excitement of going on vacation or having a long holiday weekend, buckling up could be one of your later priorities,” said Greg Reams with Kentucky State Police.

Yet, for some, their main priority is just getting through the busy traffic.

“Especially with our big trailers going up and down hills, people in cars don't understand and how we have to haul,” said Robert Hill, who was traveling to Tennessee.

Police say this section of the interstate in Laurel and Whitley County can be dangerous.

“It's a heavily traveled highway, this section of the interstate, and traffic seems to back up and people get impatient,” said Reams.

Police say they urge everyone to have fun just not on the highways.

AAA reports that even though local gas prices have increased recently, they still are not as high as last year's average.
