LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - CORBIN, Ky. (WKYT) - The truck was carrying almost 80 pigs from a farm in Indiana to a sausage plant in Tennessee. The truck’s driver had made a stop in London and was traveling down US 25 when he says a car in front of him stopped suddenly just before 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Korben Kavanagh says he quickly turned to the right but the load shifted.

“The truck slipped, took out a telephone pole, plus 30 foot of bushes,” he said.

Some animals escaped through a roof vent.

Others were trapped inside. Local farm hands and stock sales folk from London turned out to help.

“That’s the beauty of where we are at. Never want to have an accident, not a bad location a few stock yards and farmers. Always willing to help out when they need to,” said Kavanagh.

The traffic snarled traffic on busy US 25 for almost six hours while firefighters and farmers worked together to round up dozens of tired, hot and in some cases, hurt sows.

“We’re just trying to make this hot day as comfortable as possible for everybody…including these pigs,” said Steven Douglas with Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement.

The pigs that did not survive the crash were taken to a local landfill, with police saying that directive came from the state agriculture department.
