12 military markers stolen from graves in Letcher County

More than ten military markers recently went missing from three different cemeteries in Letcher County.

Police say they now know the identity of the man that violated the graves of america's heros.

Terry Adams' cousin keeps the lawn moved at the Isom Cemetery in Letcher County and Adams says that last week his cousin noticed something strange.

"He contacted me and told me the grave markers had been stolen. My grandfather's monument was actually stolen and it's just a shame," says Adams.

Deputies say 30-year-old Harley Slone of Isom allegedly stole 12 military markers from cemeteries in Blackey, Jeremiah and Isom.

When Letcher County Sheriff Danny Webb heard that Slone tried to allegedly sell the markers to a scrap yard, it hit close to home, since Webb is a Vietnam Vet.

"It bothers me that we have people that don't have respect not only for the dead but for the veterans," Webb says.

As for Adams, he says he'll be watching the coveted ground more closely to ensure that the markers of those who served their country are kept sacred.

Harley Slone is charged with 12 counts of possessing stolen property and one count of violating graves.
