WHITESBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - People in Letcher County who beat cancer came together Tuesday night with friends and family to celebrate their victory over the disease.
The celebration was part of the annual Cancer Survivors' Dinner at Pine Mountain Grill in Whitesburg. The event serves as a forerunner to the Letcher County Relay for Life on Friday night.
"It's the opportunity for us to really recognize the survivors for their journey through cancer and recognize the caregivers," American Cancer Society spokeswoman Andrea Arnett said. "It's a night specifically dedicated to just them."
Susan Ison, one of the participants in the dinner, beat cancer but lost her mother and younger sister to the disease.
"It makes you think about the people we have lost and how terrible this disease is," Ison said. "But it also makes us happy because we look around and see all the many, many survivors that we have here tonight."
These survivors are dedicated to making sure the guest list for their dinner grows every year.
"There's so many of these people I know," said cancer survivor Freida Ratliff. "I've lived most of my life in Letcher County and it's unreal ... it's almost daily that I hear somebody has been diagnosed."
The Letcher County Relay for Life will be Friday from six p.m. To midnight at Riverside Park in Whitesburg.
