LETCHER COUNTY, Ky (WYMT) - Christmas came early for many families in Letcher County Sunday.

In a building packed with donations, people from throughout Eastern Kentucky came to take their pick from “Marlow's Christmas for the needy.”

“We found a bunch of clothes over there, for the winter you know we're getting some toys next I guess,” said Paul Helton.

Volunteers said this year's event demanded a lot of work.

“We needed a lot more this time, just having to put it together in 3 weeks. It was just overwhelming,” said volunteer Deborah Sutherland.

However, by Sunday everything was set up and ready for families to choose from.

The building was full of clothes and furniture for each family to choose from.

They also received a box of food and, of course, toys for the kids.

Officials said donations will continue to come in, and they plan to keep working throughout the holiday.

“As long as we've got supplies, as long as we've got things in this building, we're going to stay until they're gone, and we're going to give it away,” said organizer, Marlow Tackett.

So that those effected by a tough economy, can have a Merry Christmas.

“We don’t want one family in the area that we know of that would go without a Christmas,” said Tackett.

This is the 34th year Marlow Tackett has held the event.
