JENKINS, Ky (WYMT) - Fun and entertaining, or a waste of county funds? You decide.

It's called the Jenkins Cruise In and Burnout, but last Saturday's event is now causing some controversy.

The mayor says one particular car that was caught on tape burning out tires should not have been participating.

It's a burnout so intense the car completely disappears in smoke, but it's not just another car.

It's a City of Jenkins Police cruiser, and the mayor says it was one of the better and more reliable cars.

"I got a phone call saying we did the burnout and it didn't look really good because it was probably the best one there, because people were concerned it was city tires being used at a burnout for fun," said Jenkins Mayor G.C. Kincer.

He says he was gone and was not asked if it was okay.

Kincer says he wants the "Cruise In" to continue, but he doesn't want the city vehicles participating.

"I'm not that upset about it, just the fact that they didn't ask. But I do want to tell them we have to take care of our cars, and that's probably not a good image for us," said Kincer.

People I talked to in the city say it's frustrating to see the video, and that it's not the first time it's happened.

"If it was a first time event, but to see that it's a common occurrence and that people in this city know about it. It's frustrating especially with taxes going up, you would hope that your taxes support something that would be more important," said one man who did not want to give his name.

Others who also did not want to comment on camera told me the officers were just having a little fun and there is nothing wrong with that.

The mayor says no disciplinary action will be taken.

The mayor also told me that he did allow a cruiser to spin their tires one time at the first burnout last year to show support for the event.
