A Letcher county inmate is still on the run after escaping from the Letcher County Jail Saturday night around 5:30 p.m.
Letcher County Jailer Don McCall says that Byron Bentley ran away from the deputy jailer after an elevator stopped on the wrong floor.
Several inmates were heading to the roof floor for outdoor recreation when the elevator stopped on the main floor of the courthouse in the District Courtroom.
"The elevator should have went directly from the basement to the roof, without stopping," said Jailer McCall.
McCall says only a deputy jailer with a radio can tell the control room what floor the elevator should go to, but the elevator malfunctioned when another floor was pressed.
"We're making the necessary arrangements to ensure that this type of thing never happens again," said Jailer McCall.
An elevator technician was working to fix the problem on Monday, but it's a little too late for a man already serving a sentence much like the one he will be facing.
"The conviction was escape, 2nd degree from home incarceration," said Jailer McCall.
He says Bentley should be considered dangerous since he was desperate enough to make a run for it.
Investigators are currently going through recorded phone conversations and visitation logs.
