Police have arrested a Fayette County student after officials say he brought a handgun to school property.
Officials with Fayette County Schools say administrators at Eastside Technical Center found the gun, which was not loaded, and a loaded clip inside the student's backpack Wednesday afternoon.
Officials say Eastside administrators had received a tip that the student had a handgun with him and was showing it on the bus on the way to the campus.
School officials say the student said he had no intention of using the weapon.
"As I understand, it goes back to perhaps events from prior years, or whatever, that he didn't feel safe for whatever reason. So now, we're trying to get to the bottom of why didn't you feel safe, other than just a generic statement of I didn't feel safe," said Mike McKenzie, FCPS Director of High Schools.
The student has been charged with unlawful possession of a weapon on school property, and was taken into custody.
Officials say he'll face legal consequences through both the juvenile court system and school district.
Families with students at Eastside Technical Center will receive letters today telling them about the incident.
