A notorious Lexington murder is the focus of a national program that airs Thursday. "Sins and Secrets" is on Investigation Discovery and profiles murder cases that deeply affected the communities where they happened. Thursday night's episode focuses on the Trent DiGiuro murder in 1994.

Retired Lexington police detective Don Evans was a new detective when he was assigned to Trent DiGiuro's murder case.

"I had been in homicide for just a few months. It was overwhelming, quite frankly, at that age and at that stage in my career," Evans said.

DiGiuro was a UK football player who was shot and killed on his front porch while celebrating his 21st birthday with friends. After years of investigations and court proceedings, the man who shot DiGiuro, Shane Ragland, cut a plea deal and walked free. He now lives in Pennsylvania.

"It was injustice at its worst, there's no doubt about that", Evans says.

Evans says when first contacted by Investigation Discovery producers, his first concern was for the DiGiuro family. He says after learning the family was participating he was willing to do it. The DiGiuro case is one of the most notorious in Lexington and, for many, the fact that Ragland is now a free man also makes it a case with little closure.

Close to 18 years later, Evans say this is one of those cases he'll never forget and he hopes Thursday show not only focuses on the crime, the investigation, or the shooter, but the young life lost.

"I mean, that family lost their son. My heart goes out to them everyday," Evans said.

"Sins and Secrets" airs on Investigation Discovery Thursday, January 12, at 9 p.m. and will re-air at midnight. Evans and others interviewed for the program are gathering at The Ketch, a local restaurant, to watch.
