Update: Crews have reopened Leestown road after Thursday's water main break.
It happened in the middle of the afternoon rush hour, but late Thursday night a busy Lexington Road was still closed because of a water main break.
Police shut down Leestown Road around the Alexandria Drive intersection. Crews spent hours trying to make repairs. For many of those stuck in rush hour traffic, it wasn't clear what the problem was. "I don't know what's going on. Do you know what's going on?" Israel Abelar asked after turning off Leestown to follow a detour. Upon learning of the eight-inch pipe that burst, "Oh, it's not good. It's going to take time," he said.
Some were on their way to dinner. For others dinner was on its way to them. Benjamin Steinmetz did his best to maintain a positive attitude as he waited to deliver a pizza. The delay gave him plenty of time to rehearse his explanation to the guy waiting for his delivery. "I guess the water main on Leestown Road broke, sorry about that," Steinmetz said, "You know, it just depends on what type of person you get if they're going to make a problem out of it, then I'll be back in an hour with your next pizza."
Officials with Kentucky American Water said they were able to isolate the break, but repairs would still take several hours to complete.
About 60 customers temporarily lost water service. Kentucky American Water said repair crews began repressurizing the line about 10:00pm, and they expected the road to reopen around midnight.
