Police say shooting suspect lied, caused standoff

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - They say his lie sparked a standoff. WKYT is learning more about a man police say shot another man, then claimed someone else did it.

Lexington police have charged 22-year-old Darryl Brown with assault after a shooting Friday afternoon on Cambridge Drive.

Neighbors told WKYT they saw shots fired behind Winding Brook Apartments, then thought they saw the shooter go into one of the apartments.

"There were cops everywhere. We couldn't get to the house. They had our driveway blocked off and patrol cars everywhere, kids getting off the school bus," noted neighbor Mary Parker.

Police blocked off an entire neighborhood, thinking their shooter was inside one of the apartment buildings.

"Two gentlemen went into a building right beside mine. Not even two minutes later I heard two shots. The gentlemen come out, ran behind me, behind the building, into the creek and came out a little farther on down the parking lot," said witness Anthony Vaughn.

Police are now telling us 22-year-old Darryl Brown shot a man in the chest, somehow shot himself in the hand, and then lied to police, told them someone shot him too, and that someone was inside one of the apartment buildings.

Brown is now charged with assault. Police say his lies are the reason they brought in the SWAT team, and stood outside for hours thinking they were in a standoff with a shooter.

Police do believe the victim's injuries are life-threatening. They say he is in critical condition at UK Hospital.
