LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Greendale Road and Mercer Road were closed for hours, just before 6 p.m. Thursday, following two crashes that killed one person and injured six others.

The Fayette County coroner's office has identified the man killed in the crash as 63-year-old Tommy Huff of Jessamine County.

The names of the six people injured in the crashes have not been released.

"It's been a major headache as far as traffic congestion," started Sgt. Ronald Keaton of the Lexington Police Department said of the crashes.

As people were trying to leave work from the nearby businesses, including Amazon, they found themselves in a jam and it all started after one driver, identified as Huff, hit a Mustang into a sitting semi truck.

"There was a red Mustang stopped at the red light at Greendale and Mercer," described Sgt. Keaton, "A pickup truck came up behind the Mustang, rear-ended the Mustang, knocked it into a tractor trailer that was sitting on the other side of the intersection."

After hitting the Mustang, the pickup continued down Greendale Road and hit another car head on, making a bad situation much worse.

"The driver of the Dodge was transported to the hospital," said Sgt. Keaton, adding, "there were also four children in there with him (driver of the Dodge). They were taken to the hospital but I'm not sure of injuries or condition on those."

The two crashes were just a few hundred yards apart and all caused by the same driver.
However, the pickup driver, identified as Huff, didn't survive, leaving police with unanswered questions.

"At this time we don't have any idea why he fled the scene of that first crash or what caused him to lose control here and cause this collision," stated Sgt. Keaton.

The Mustang driver was taken to the hospital, police said at the scene they're not sure of his condition except to say none of the six appeared to have any life threatening injuries.
