Severe storm knocks down trees, leaves thousands without power in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Thousands of people in Lexington were without electricity after severe thunderstorms blew through the city just after midnight Friday.

At the peak of the outage more than 9,000 Kentucky Utilities customers were in the dark. As of Friday afternoon, the number was down to about 350 customers. KU has crews throughout the city working to restore power.

Many trees and power lines have been reported down because of the storm.

In Fayette County most of the power outages were around the Newtown Pike and Russell Cave Road areas with a large portion reporting outages in the Lansdowne area as well.

On Marcellus Drive, a tree fell onto a home crashing through the ceiling. At the Old Farm Apartment Complex on Appian way a large tree fell crashing on two cars.
