More than five thousand tons of salt, a fleet of salt trucks, and dozens of wokers are ready to tackle even the toughest Fayette County winter.

Fayette County Roads and Forestry director Sam Williams says his department is planning for the worst and hoping for the best.

Thursday's snow gave workers a chance to pull out the snow plows for the first time this season. They bagan salting and scraping around 5:00 a.m.

This winter the department is using the same salt compounds they always have, but this winter more emphasis is being put on environmentally friendly materials going into the storm drains.

Officials with the Water Quality Division say road salts can be harmful to some plantlife and freshwater ecosystems, but they are able to mitigate the impact in Lexington by following Environmental Protection Agency approved guidelines.
