The special meeting of the Urban County Council in Lexington Tuesday at times got tense. Council members discussed everything from the budget to any alternatives for temporarily closing fire stations like Fire Station No.4 along Jefferson Street.

Vice Mayor Jim Gray has called the meeting to inquire about Mayor Jim Newberry's temporary closing, or brown out, of Fire Station No. 4 this past Saturday. Firefighters and their families came out in full force to protest.

The mayor, though not present at the meeting, earlier said he did so to avoid layoffs and tax hikes.

In the meeting, Fire Chief Robert Hendricks admitted it was a tough option to choose, but the best one to keep from closing stations permanently.

Gray and Newberry are running against each other in the May primary.

Former Mayor Teresa Isaac is also a candidate.
