LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Gov. Steve Beshear testified he was not
aware a conversation he had with a road contractor pertained to the
key prosecution witness in a bid-rigging investigation in the state
Beshear took the stand Thursday in the trial of former
Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert and highway contractor
Leonard Lawson. Both are facing charges they conspired to steer
some $130 million in road construction projects to Lawson's
companies in 2006 and 2007.
The governor testified he had a conversation with Lawson on Feb.
29 in which Lawson asked him to make sure that former
Transportation Cabinet official Jim Rummage was treated fairly.
But Beshear said he was not aware at the time that Rummage was
the subject of an investigation. Beshear's testimony was expected
to continue Thursday.
