Crossing guard to be recognized by city

Tuesday, a school crossing guard will be recognized for his efforts that saved a woman and child.

James Smith sprang into action Monday morning when he saw a car coming too fast toward the intersection near Lansdowne Elementary School on Redding Road in Lexington.

Smith says he could see the driver wasn't going to stop, so he started pushing people to safety.

In the process, he was hit in the hip with the car's side mirror but wasn't seriously hurt.

Lexington Police say Mayor Jim Newberry has thanked Smith and will recognize him as an outstanding citizen during Tuesday afternoon's work session of the Urban County Council.

Police say no charges will be filed against the driver. They say she couldn't see through her windshield because she had not defrosted it enough before leaving home.
