Police to pursue charges in crossing guard incident

Lexington police say they plan to pursue charges against a driver who struck a crossing guard near Lansdowne Elementary on Monday.

That comes as the guard prepares to be honored by Lexington's mayor for his heroic efforts.

James Smith sprang into action Monday morning when he saw a car coming too fast toward the intersection on Redding Road in Lexington.

Smith says he could see the driver wasn't going to stop, so he started pushing people to safety, including a woman and a child.

In the process he was hit in the hip with the car's side mirror, but was not seriously hurt.

Smith will be honored at the council meeting Tuesday afternoon.

Police say the driver of the car that stuck Smith had not cleared off her windows completely, and that may have hindered her visibility.

The name of the driver isn't being released.
