Today Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry announced a new initiative as part of the city's recycling program . Their partner for this initiative is a gas station.
The press conference took place inside of one of the first Speedways to take part in the program.
The gas stations began putting recycling containers beside garbage cans to give their customers a chance to recycle their garbage.
The idea came from two interns working in the department of waste management.
"I realized I always clean out my car at the gas station and it just made more sense to be able to recycle there," said Elizabeth Rebmann.
Because of the success of the pilot program Speedway is expanding it's recycling from three stores to thirteen other stores in Lexington.
