Killed while trying to get to work, a central Kentucky nurse is dead after a head-on collision. Investigators say 45-year-old Vicki Hutchison was killed when an SUV, driven by a man without a valid license, slammed into her vehicle.
The accident happened on Briar Hill Road near the Fayette-Bourbon county line. Authorities say the other driver swerved into her lane.
Friends and co-workers remember Hutchison as a loving person dedicated to helping others.
People in her Clark County community remember Vicki Hutchison as a kind and generous neighbor. Christina Ellis lives next door to the Hutchisons. A fellow nurse at UK, Ellis can remember when Vicki worked at a smaller hospital. "We just kind of got to chit-chatting and found out that each other were nurses, and she asked where I worked at, and I told her at UK, and it was kind of funny because she told me, she said, now don't be going getting that UK-itis on me," Ellis told 27 Newsfirst.
But Ellis says after Vicki came to work at UK, she loved her new patients and colleagues. "And I would always tease her," Ellis said, "I told her because now you're working at UK, and she always teased me about that."
Co-workers at the hospital say Vicki was a great nurse and a great person. Ellis tells 27 Newsfirst Vicki was always ready to help others, especially her neighbors. "Right in this line, she said, we've got some medical professionals, so if anything happens to anyone around here, we just have to knock on each others' door, and we'll come do whatever needs to be done," Ellis said.
It's that generous spirit that friends say makes it even more tragic that in her own time of need, Vicki couldn't be saved.
The other driver, 23-year-old Christobal Ramirez-Cordoba, was cited for driving without a license. Court records show this was not the first time Cordoba has been charged with driving without a license. He was caught last november as well, pled guilty, and paid a fine.
