Capozzi captured in Woodford County

The search has ended for a federal inmate who escaped from a van in Central Kentucky.

37-year-old Derek Capozzi was caught around 6 p.m. Saturday night. Authorities found him around a tree line near a sewer plant on Kentucky Avenue in Versailles, after two Woodford County men, Phillip Bryant and Alfred Marmolejo, spotted Capozzi in a wooded area, where it appeared he had been camped out.

Officer Pat Melton, with the Versailles Police Department, says Capozzi was clearly "spent" and visibly tired, hungry, and cold at the time of capture.

Police say Capozzi is not believed to have committed any other crimes while on the run.

The various agencies say this capture wouldn't have been possible without the teamwork they had with each other and the community.

He had been missing since around 10 a.m. Thursday, when he somehow managed to escape from a Grayson County Detention Center van, which was driving in Woodford County at the time.

Capozzi was serving time for several violent charges, which include dismembering a 19-year-old woman, and taking part in organized crime.

Officials say Capozzi kicked out the door of the van transporting him, and got away, despite being handcuffed and shackled.

At the time, it was turning onto Highway 33, from the Bluegrass Parkway in Woodford County.
