UK professor's study of students & drug use to be featured on 60 Minutes

A University of Kentucky professor and his study of students using so-called "smart drugs" are the focus of a 60 Minutes story that airs this Sunday.

Alan DeSantis, a professor of Communications, told Katie Couric 34% of students surveyed had taken the drugs without a prescription.

DeSantis said he did the study after hearing many of his students talking about taking Adderall and Ritalin.

He says the percentage of users jumped as they got closer to graduation, pushing 60%.

In juniors and seniors in fraternities and sororities, the number leaped to 80%.

DeSantis says the surveyed students claimed the drugs improved scores by one or two letter grades.
