Midway College to award first Master's Degrees

MIDWAY, Ky. — Midway College is set to make history once again this month as the College prepares to award its first Master level degrees in the institution’s history. Among the 353 students receiving degrees, 24 are receiving their Master in Business Administration (MBA) degrees.
“This has been an incredible year of firsts for Midway College,” said Dr. William B. Drake, Jr., President of Midway College. “In January we announced our plans to open a School of Pharmacy in Paintsville, Kentucky, enrolling the first class in 2011. In February we announced plans to offer degree programs to serve service members and others in the Ft. Knox area. And this month we will celebrate the graduation of our first Master of Business Administration students – a significant milestone for any institution of higher learning, but particularly impressive for our College which only began awarding baccalaureate degrees 20 years ago.”

“Our first MBA graduates completed an intensive and comprehensive program in twenty months, attending evening and weekend courses,” said Dr. Eric Bolland, MBA Chair. “This initial class of professionals and managers, working together on various class projects has demonstrated the success of our MBA program. I believe these graduates will have much success in their careers based on their many classroom achievements”
Midway College’s 353 graduates include students who completed their studies and earned their degrees during the period, December 2009 and May 2010.

Graduation will be held on Saturday, May 15 at 5 p.m. on the main campus in Midway, Kentucky, outside, weather permitting, in the Graves Amphitheater. This year’s commencement speaker is Ashland Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James J. O'Brien. He also is Midway College’s Board of Trustees Chairman. Drake said “when selecting a speaker the College looked for an international leader in business whose scope of responsibilities encompassed all of the complexities we endeavor to present within our MBA curriculum. Fortunately such a person already serves our College as the head of our Board of Trustees. Mr. O’Brien provides a shining example for our students and one we hope they will strive to emulate in their lives and careers.”

Midway College was founded in 1847 as the Kentucky Female Orphan School by Dr. L.L. Pinkerton. In 1942 it became Pinkerton High School and Midway Junior College. By 1972 Pinkerton High School was phased out and it became exclusively Midway Junior College. In 1978 it was officially renamed Midway College and in 1991 awarded its first bachelor degrees. In 1995 the School for Career Development was created and evening programs were established to serve both men and women adult learners and offer degree completion programs. Today, Midway College is ranked 13 out of the 32 public and private institutions in Kentucky as a provider of baccalaureate degrees. The College has a full-time faculty of 62 and an enrollment of 1,800 students. Midway College currently offers courses at 14 locations throughout Kentucky and online.
