Gas leak and water main break tie up traffic in Downtown Lexington

Things are getting back to normal at a Downtown Lexington intersection, where a gas leak caused some problems earlier.

Columbia Gas officials say a crew doing some excavation work hit a two inch pipe in the area of West Vine & Mill Streets, causing the leak around 3 Monday afternoon.

They closed that intersection, and diverted traffic onto South Broadway, while they made repairs.

Traffic was allowed back into the area around 4:30 this afternoon.

But around that time, a water main broke on West Maxwell between Marino and Madison.

Police shut down sidestreets in that area so crews could repair the damage.

About 24 homes and one business lost water service. Crews expect to have water back by Tuesday but say customers will need to boil any water used for drinking or cooking.

The cause of the water break is under investigation.
