LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Starting Monday, November 5th, at 7:00 PM, the Annex garage in downtown Lexington will be closed for renovations.

The 40-year-old structure is scheduled to reopen in the spring of 2012. Until then, drivers are going to have to find somewhere else to park.

"I think it's good that they are doing the needed renovations," explains Emily Cravens, "however, this is right before the holiday season. This is going to seriously impact people driving and parking downtown."

The garage, which is on the corner of Main and Martin Luther King, is one of the four structures the city handed over to "Lex-Park".

The three million dollar project involves much needed safety repairs and a new entry and exit system. Back in August, the top two floors of the parking garage were closed for repairs.

Some of the repairs that will be made are the removal of old concrete and rusted steel; installation of a membrane to protect the concrete from water and salt; some new lighting; and a fresh new paint job for the elevators and the stairwells.

The building, which was built back in in the 1960's, provides parking for many downtown attractions and amenities.

Alternative parking spots will be available at the transit parking garage as well as the courthouse garage. "We'll only have two places to park which is going to make coming downtown even more difficult. I guess we'll just have to see how this plays out. Downtown Lexington doesn't have a lot of street parking so I think this is going to be a difficult transition."
